Zapovednik Voroninsky, in the Inzhavinsky and Kirsanovsky Districts of the Tambov
Region was established in 1994. Its area is 10,8 thousand ha. The Zapovednik is located in
the valley of the Vorona River, the right tributary of Khoper, in the forest-steppe zone.
The plant cover comprises upland and bairak oak forests, pine forests, alder forests,
meadows, steppe communities, shore and aquatic groupings and wetland complexes. The flora
includes numerous endemic, relict and rare plants. Among the species listed in the Red
Data Book of the Russian Federation are: dwarf iris, dark-winged orchis, etc.
The Vorona River area is the habitat of the beaver and also of a rare species —
Russian desman (listed in the Red Data Books of the Russian Federation and IUCH). At Lake
Ramza (the greatest lake in the Region) numerous water birds nest and stop over the
flyway. The rare avian species include the golden eagle, the saker falcon, osprey,
white-tailed eagle, short-toed eagle.
